The picture on the left shows a typical ride-on scrubber dryer. Nothing particularly special about it except maybe its size which is substantial, but we will come back to that.
Why a Floor Scrubber?
As the most popular type of cleaning machine the scrubber dryer is also the most effective. By combining mechanical cleaning with a cleaning fluid a scrubber dryer will produce floors that are spotlessly clean. The machine’s water collection system also makes sure they are dry almost instantly and therefore safe. The additional benefit of this is that waste water and its pollutants are collected and disposed of properly.
How Does A Scrubber Dryer Work?
If you need a scrubber dryer understanding the principles of how they work will help you get the right machine and get the most from it. The schematic shows how the major components are arranged in our sample machine, click to enlarge. Brushes at the front, water collection system, affectionately known as a squeegee, at the back with the operator sitting at the front for ease of use. Under the body work we have two large tanks, the batteries and some motors. One of the motors provides traction the other vacuum for the water collection system. One tank is for clean water the other for waste water.
As the scrubber dryer moves forward the cleaning solution is dispensed into the brushes and onto the floor. The brushes rotate and scrub the floor loosening and lifting the dirt. The water and the dirt are sucked up by the squeegee and pumped into the waste water tank. There are however a number of important variables in this process, namely the speed of the vehicle, the speed and pressure of the scrubbing process, the amount and make-up of the cleaning solution and the number of passes you make over the floor. Also the number and style of scrubbing brush can be specified. Each one of these is very important and we will be examining each in later posts.

We designed, developed and now manufacture a unique washing and scrubbing head for use on compact road and pavement sweepers.
The head was originally conceived around ten years ago. Around this time Councils and cleaning contractors became increasingly concerned about the heavily contaminated water produced during street cleaning going straight into the drains. We knew from our experience providing industrial scrubber driers that using similar technology for street and pavement cleaning would solve this problem.
Our scrubber head is the result and now sells all over the world. Not only do we sell it fitted to our compact road scrubber drier, but it is also sold to other companies selling similar machines. As you can see in the video below it does a great job that no other machine can match.
Cleaning the Pit lane at the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix
The story here is simple. At the 2016 Canadian GP meeting a competing car had its gearbox break and deposit all its oil in the pit lane. This was obviously unacceptable so a local cleaning contractor used a machine fitted with one of our head and squeegee kits, built in Market Harborough, to wash the pit lane and collect the waste water and oil. Note the clean line across the white road sector, it’s even cleaner than the surrounding pavement.
British ingenuity and engineering skill at work, brilliant.
One of the successes of this year has been our Powerflex Road Scrubber drier. Designed and built by us in Market Harborough it is being used throughout the world to tackle cleaning tasks that traditional road and street sweepers simply cannot touch.
Being a scrubber dryer our machine applies water to the surface being cleaned and scrubs it using that water. This loosens the dirt and lifts any stains. The dirty water and the grime is then sucked up by the full width squeegee at the machine’s rear. The result is a really clean and dry roadway or pavement with no tyre marks and all the dirt and grime collected ready for proper disposal. It has to be seen to be believed.
Performance and Reputation
Such is the performance and reputation of our Powerflex Road Scrubber Drier that we have sold them throughout Europe; 6 each to Germany and Poland for example and ten to Turkish users! In addition we have sold them is Asia; Singapore, and even the South Pacific island of Fiji! In all we have exported nearly 50 units in the last twelve months due to this machines unique abilities.

Just delivered this scrubber drier to the South Leicestershire College metalworking workshop.
As is pretty obvious it will be used to clean the floor but being a scrubber drier it will not only clean the floor it will also scrub the floor. This means oil spills can be cleaned up quickly and effectively, and that the floor will remain unstained.
Cleaning up after students – umm why does that sound familiar?
A Range of Scrubber Driers
The Bit floor scrubber is one of our range of pedestrian scrubber driers. All are robust, high quality machines that are renown for their performance in the most arduous conditions. Contact us for a free on-site demonstration.
With our weather being its normal mix of showers and rain (sic), wet and dirty floors are a problem for most businesses. Visitors and employees cannot help but walk in water and dirt. This not only looks bad but also creates a slip hazard. Many of us have seen entrances and lobbies with “Caution Wet Floor” warning signs obstructing essential access. Imagine the scale of the problem if you are responsible for a shopping centre with thousands of visitors arriving each hour.
Step Forward The Floor Scrubber
Industrial floor scrubbers are fantastic at solving this problem. When they are used to clean floors they collect 99% of the cleaning fluid or water using a vacuum powered squeegee. Used in lobbies with wet and dirty floors, they can quickly clean and dry the floor leaving it spotless and ready for use. No caution warning signs needed now.
Big or Small
Floor scrubbers come in two flavours; walk behind or ride-on. Depending on the size of the area to be kept clean you will choose whichever suits you best. All our machines bar one are battery powered meaning that trailing power leads will not create another hazard. Even a small walk behind floor scrubber will makes short work of a lobby or entrance made wet by recent rain, so keeping your lobby clear is no longer a problem. Requiring no specific operator training,
being very easy to use and manoeuvre means anyone could use it if they thought the floor was becoming dangerous or unsightly.
The floods in the Wales and the South of England are appalling. Our thoughts are with the individuals and businesses that are suffering at the hands of this exceptional weather. While the rain continues to fall and the water levels continue to rise, flood defence is the focus.
Once the waters have subsided the big clear-up will start. People will want to get back to some form of normality as quickly as possible. We hope that’s where we will be able to help. In our range of machines there are a number that are ideally suited to clearing roads and cleaning floors.
Floor scrubbers are fantastic at clearing liquid spills and leave the floor spotlessly clean, having collected the waste water. Their road going counterparts are equally effective. If you have a factory that has had its floor flooded a scrubber drier will collect water from all the low spots in the floor and remove the detritus left by the flood water. Not a pleasant thought but an effective solution to the problem.
Good luck to all those affected. Let us know if we can help.

We sell hundreds of machines a year and this means we have a buoyant second hand business. Customers will often want to upgrade or replace machines before they are at the end of their useful life so we willingly take their old machine in part exchange. Once we have the used machine we give it a thorough inspection, strip down and service parts where necessary and then put it up for sale.
Pre-Owned Cleaning Machines
Pre-owned sweeping and scrubbing machines make up a large part of our second hand fleet. These may well be long term hire machines returned at the end of the contract or machines part exchanged when a customer upgrades. Regardless a common feature is that the working hours will be low for the age of the machine and it will be a long way from the end of its working life. Wearing parts such as brushes and filters may have needed replacing but otherwise the machine will be sound and capable of providing many years of reliable service.
To sell our machines we often have to demonstrate them. We have a large demonstration fleet just for this purpose. These machines have to be replaced before they are too old or when a new model comes along. Machines retired from our demo fleet are the pearls in our bargain basement. These ex-dem sweepers and scrubbers will have very low hours and will have been finely fettled and cared for. If you can get one they are a great bargain, as good as new but offering a significant saving on the new price.
Our second hand machines are listed on our website in the Bargain Basement section. Ordered by price, at the time of writing there are about 30 machines available. In a later post we will explain in greater detail what we do to bring the machines in our bargain basement up to scratch, but in the meantime if you see one you are interested in call us – it won’t be there long.
There are few offers that are as powerful as the famous two for one offers in the supermarkets. Something you need and you can get two of them for the price of one! Now the saying; “if it seems too good to be true it probably is” comes to mind but sometimes, as in the supermarket’s offers, these things are real bargains with no strings attached.
Too Good to be True?
In our range is a machine that offers certain users a similar two for one opportunity. Combo as its been creatively named combines the capabilities of a sweeper with a scrubber drier.
Activate the Scrubber Drier
So how does that help? You run a splendid retail shopping mall and keep it clean sweeping up fast food wrappings, litter, and dust. Great everything’s clean and shiney and then someone’s pride and joy throws their fizzy drink all over the floor and the crowds walk it around an area the size of a football pitch. Slippery floor then sticky floor – urgh!!! Our trusty sweeper cannot clear it up, the fizzy drink sticks the dirt and grime to the floor and will not let go. If our sweeper is a Combo though we just activate the scrubber drier function and it now sweeps up all the loose dirt prior to scrubbing and drying the floor. Simple, quick and impresses the shoppers – wow maybe that’s a three for one offer!
With the vast array of cleaning machines available which one do you choose? This post attempts to give you some insight into the questions you will need to answer. Not rocket science but maybe help you prepare for your discussions with prospective suppliers. Also it might help you avoid overlooking an obvious but important point.
Dry or wet?
Dust and debris that is dry can be collected by a sweeper. Introduce water, grease or oil and the situation changes. So the first consideration is just that, will your cleaning be in a dry environment? Yes; look at sweepers. No; then you will need a scrubber drier or a combination machine.
Cleaning Result Required
If you just want to collect dust and debris and are happy with the appearance of the floor then again a sweeper will do just that. However if you want to remove marks and staining from the floor you will want the scrubbing action of a scrubber drier.
Where do you want to clean?
Working inside vs outside introduces a number of considerations. I addition to the wet vs dry situations we have already considered there is the machine’s motor – if its not electric it will produce fumes. Is this acceptable? If not electric power is a your only way to go. When looking at the sweeper’s power requirement look for synergy with the forklifts you might have on site already. Do you have LPG powered forklifts or red diesel on site for tractors then could your sweeper’s motor take advantage of these resources?
Size of the problem
This is a trade off. Cleaning machines have a theoretical cleaning capacity, this is derived from the machine’s cleaning width and its working speed. So, if you want to clean your warehouse floor you could choose a large machine that cleans it in an hour. A machine with a smaller cleaning capacity might take two hours but cost 30% less. There is your dilemma!
A walk behind sweeper can clean a large car park. But, the time it takes when you consider the speed at which it can operate, the number of trips to empty the hopper and that the operator might be exhausted by the amount of walking would make it unacceptable: Then you have to figure out how much you want to pay to reduce or eliminate these factors.
So there you have it. Not exhaustive and it does not cover everything, but this might be useful as a starting point. At the end of the day talking to your suppliers engineers will be the best way to get just the right machine for your application.
